After Caroline left, Amanda tried to go back to work, but the apartment felt claustrophobic. She missed her old home so much that sometimes it hurt. The tranquility and peace she had felt there had been replaced by the muted sounds of a city neighborhood, not altogether unpleasant, but different. And even though the area was quiet during the week except for the sounds of residents as they left for work and then returned home, it was bustling on the weekends. Just another adjustment she had to make. She had done her best here, turning the dining room into her studio, but it was too small, too confining, and the closest thing she had to a view from her drawing board was her neighbor’s porch and the trees beyond. Maybe a long walk would help her put things into perspective.
Today the air was crisp but not cold so Amanda donned a heavy sweater instead of a coat. As she walked at a slower pace than usual, she breathed deeply trying to still the panic that had been triggered by Caroline’s revelation. After she had gone a few blocks, she calmed down enough to consider the implications of what Price’s sister had told her, and replayed their conversation in detail. It wasn’t any consolation to know that Price was unhappy. She wasn’t happy either, but now she had a baby to think of. For her there was never any option other than having this baby. Once she had gotten over the initial shock, she realized she desperately wanted someone in her life to love.
She had been stunned to learn that Caroline and Price were brother and sister. There was certainly no family resemblance. And while she was relieved to know that Caroline was Price’s sister, she was also saddened by it. It only served to point toward his refusal to engage in a committed relationship. It wasn’t because he was involved with Caroline as Amanda had thought—it was simply that he didn’t want a relationship with her.
She sighed, and pushed her hands deep into the pockets of her sweater. It didn’t do any good to be angry. She had to concentrate on the positive things in her life. She had someone else to think about now.
